As a child, Musk was introverted and bookish, with a passion for reading and technology. He taught himself computer programming at the age of 12, and sold his first computer game, called Blastar, for $500. He attended Pretoria Boys High School, where he was bullied for being an introvert and for his interests in technology and science fiction.

Musk studied at the University of Pretoria for a few months before transferring to the University of Pennsylvania. He graduated in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science in Physics and a Bachelor of Science in Economics. After the success of PayPal, Musk turned his attention to space travel, launching SpaceX in 2002 with the goal of reducing the cost of space exploration and enabling the colonization of Mars. He also became an early investor and CEO of Tesla, Inc., an electric vehicle manufacturer, and founded The Boring Company to develop underground transportation systems.
